Q-Is it permissible to wear a pain patch while fasting?

A-A pain patch is used externally hence it will not invalidate the fast. You may fast in the month of Ramadaan while using the pain patch. Likewise all other ‘patches’ applied externally would not break the fast.

Q-A person, due to an existing Medical condition of having only one kidney, has been advised by his doctor to drink lots of water. What is the ruling of him having to fast in Ramadaan? Is there a waiver for such a person?

A-Generally with all chronic illnesses whereby a person’s health is at risk should he fast, fasting is waivered for this category of people. With regards to the person in question above the seriousness of the condition has to be established by an Islamic conscious Medical professional. If it is possible for him to fast without adversely affecting his health, then he should fast. However, if fasting will aggravate his condition and there is fear of his condition deteriorating, then he should not fast. He will compulsorily be obliged to make Qadhaa (pay back) of the missed fasts when he is healthy again. It will be advisable for him to wait until such a time of the year when the days are short, thus, facilitating easiness in keeping the Qadhaa. However, if this is also not possible and he has no hope of recovering his health, then he should pay the Fidya for every missed fast. The fidya amount is the amount of sadaqatul Fitr.

Q-Many people suffer from excruciating and blinding headaches during Ramadaan (migraine). Sometimes these are triggered by hunger and can only be treated after having eaten and taking the prescribed medication. These headaches become unbearable at times and one cannot continue fasting. What does a person do in such a case?

A-Should a person feel that he/she cannot continue the day fasting then in this case the fast should be broken and Qadhaa of it be made after Ramadaan. However out of respect for the great month and for others who are fasting it will be advised not to openly eat and drink. This should be done in privacy.

Q-A pregnant woman feels that she would not be able to fast in Ramadaan. Does she have any concessions and if in the affirmative what are these?

A-Regarding fasting during pregnancy, it will be permissible for an expectant mother to not fast if she has been advised by an Islamic conscious medical professional that fasting will adversely affect the growth and development of the foetus. However if there are medications that can be taken that would prevent this during the fasting then this medicine should be taken in the form of an injection, as this does not break the fast and she should fast. However if she still omits a Ramadaan fast then she will have to make Qadhaa by keeping the missed or broken fasts after Ramadaan. Feeding the poor/fidyah is only an option for those who even after Ramadaan do not have the physical ability to fast. This does not apply to a pregnant or even breast-feeding woman.


Q-Is it permissible to cut one's hair and nails while fasting or does one have to wait until sunset ?

A-It is permissible to cut one’s hair and nails while fasting. This act does not break the fast.


Q-After having an erection, I discovered clear sticky liquid (Mazi) whilst fasting. Does this break my fast? Do I have to make Qadha?

  1. The emission of Mazi (pre-ejaculatory fluid) does not break the fast. No Qadhaa is required.

Q- Whilst fasting is it necessary to avoid the inhalation of talcum powder and spray emanating from an aerosol e.g. a deodorant? These things normally always gets into ones mouth and nose (although not a substantial amount). Its avoidance is only possible with the covering of the face when using these. Does the inhalation of these break the fast?

A-In principle, anything going down the throat while fasting nullifies the fast. If the talcum powder or aerosol does not go down the throat, it will not nullify the fast. However caution must be exercised when using these products.


Q-If a girl starts her period for the first time in Ramadan, what should she do?

A-A girl who attains puberty (during the day of the days of Ramadaan) now becomes liable for fasting. Since her condition of menses will not permit her to keep her fast, she should at least act like a fasting person. Similarly would be the case of a mature woman who experiences her menses whilst fasting. i.e. she would act like a fasting person. And after Ramadaan she should keep all the fasts that she had missed during her menses.


Q-Can a spouse kiss his/her partner whilst fasting?

A-Whilst this is permissible the following two conditions have to be met:

1. One does not swallow the saliva of his/her partner;
 2. One has control over his/her desire and is not driven by desire to sexual intercourse or ejaculation.

If the above two conditions are not met it would be best to abstain.

Q-Does masturbation whilst fasting break the fast?

A-Masturbation in itself is a great sin whether one is fasting or not. However should this happen whilst fasting, the fast does break but only Qadhaa has to be made for this broken fast. There is no Kaffaarah. (i.e. fasting 60 consecutive days).

Q-Whilst fasting which of the following break the fast and which do not, Eye drops, eardrops, nose drops, and asthma inhaler?

A-In order to clearly understand the response to the above query, one needs to understand that some Jurists, after much consideration and research, have concluded that when any liquid, food or medicine reaches, ingests and settles in one of the three considered cavities of the human body viz. the throat, the stomach, the intestines, the fast is NULLIFIED.

It is important to note that the Jurists have also identified other apertures and pathways which lead to the above three major cavities. Some of these apertures are the ears, nose, and the anal aperture. Of note is the fact that the medical profession has a slight disagreement with the Fuqaha with regards to:-

* The ear: whilst some Jurists considered the outer ear to have a direct pathway to the throat, subsequently reaching the stomach, the E.N.T experts are of the opinion that there is no link. Their view is that the only time when any liquid will pass through from the outer ear to the middle ear is when the tympanic membrane (eardrum) is perforated. * Regarding this difference, contemporary Jurists like Mufti Rafi Uthmani (D.B) strongly advise that the views of the E.N.T experts of our time be accepted, since there is no certainty with regards to the ear having a passage to the throat. We should therefore refer this matter to the medical experts. Therefore the application of eardrops will NOT break the fast.

* The eyes: the medical profession clearly state that a narrow duct links up the eye cavity with the throat via the nose. Regarding this difference Hazrat Mufti Rafi Uthmani Saheb explains that:- = Ahadith have proven that the use of surma and/or eye drops does not nullify the fast. Additionally, this duct is so narrow that whatever passes through it from the eye is (insignificant and) negligible. Here again, the application of eye drops will NOT break the fast.

As far as the inhaler is concerned, all medication taken by inhalation necessarily pass through the throat before they eventually settle in the lungs, thus BREAKING the fast. Additionally, some of this medication also finds its way to the stomach.
