WEAKNESSES OF THE UMMAH… continued from the previous issue.

Islam is a complete way of life for all times legislated and perfected by Allah Ta’ala and His beloved Messenger Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam thereby leaving no scope for ‘amendments’ or changes whatsoever.

Throughout times people have made additions to the religion which more often were things or acts stemming from their past cultures and had absolutely nothing or very little to do with the religion itself. And then modern times have produced modern thinkers who deem it fit that the religion undergoes a ‘revamp’ in order to make it ‘user friendly’ to modern day living.

In islam and introduction to the religion is termed as Bidah (An innovation). On the other hand upholding what the Messenger of Allah Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam has brought to us is term as Sunnah. Bidah and the sunnah can never go together as one destroys the religion whilst the other is the religion in itself and lends unimaginable beauty to it.This is the second weakness that the ummah suffers from today and which has become causal to our states of misery and hopelessness.

The Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam has informed us of this in the hadeeth of Hadrat Hudhayfah Radiyallaahu Anhu in which he is reported to have said:

"The people used to ask the Messenger of Allah Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam about the good, and I used to ask him about the evil out of fear that it would reach me." So I asked the Messenger of Allah: "O Messenger of Allah, we were living in ignorance and evil, then Allah brought this good (Islam) to us. So will there be any evil after this good?" He replied: "Yes." I then asked: "Will there be any good after this evil?" He replied: "Yes, but it will be tainted." So I asked: "What will be its taint?" He replied: "A people will come who will guide others to other than my way, you will approve of some of their actions and disapprove of others." I further enquired: "Then is there any evil after this good?" He said: "Yes! Callers at the gates of Hell - whoever responds to their call, they will be thrown into the fire." I then said: "O Messenger of Allah! Describe them to us." He said: "They will be from our people and speak our language." I asked: "So what do you order me to do if that reaches me?" He said: "Stick to the Jama'ah (the united body) of the Muslims and their Imam (ruler)." I further asked: "What if they have neither Jama'ah or an Imam?" He said: "Then keep away from all those sects, and hold on firmly on to my sunnah as you would firmly grip something with your teeth until death reaches you whilst you are in that state."(Bukhari and Muslim)

The success of this ummah lies in its rigid and strict adherence to the sunnah. This is a proven and undisputable fact. On the other hand the destruction of this ummah lies in Bidah or innovation. This too has been proven.

Bidah or innovation sin Deen is amongst the most dangerous sins for most sins are known as sins whilst bidah is not regarded by its perpetrators as a sin. This is only because it is masked by Shaytaan as something beautiful and beneficial. After all, innovations in Deen happen to be amongst the sinister ploys and plots of Shaytaan to take away the ummah from true Deen. What strengthens this superficial beauty even more is that because it is done in the name of religion people cannot see the evil lurking within. Thus the chances of repentance from bidah are almost remote. After all one would repent when one recognises that one has sinned. Bidah deprives one of this recognition because of the mask it carries.

It is for this reason that the Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam has warned the ummah of this grave sin. He is reported to have said, “Every innovation is misguidance and every misguidance will ultimately end up in hell-fire.”

The wordings of the above hadeeth are sufficient to explain the graveness of innovations to Deen. When something would lead you to hell-fire then there cannot be any good therein. Whatever ‘goodness’ is shown is but superficial and only a façade of it. In reality it is only evil.

Today more than the sunnah, Bidah is given more importance. We find people all over the world engaging in various acts all in the name of religion. The most tragic part thereof is that these people think they are doing good. How can there be goodness in something that the Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam has condemned?

Imagine on the day of Qiyaamah when we will all be moving towards the well of Kauthar with great hope of being given to drink from the hands of the Blessed Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam but then there will be those who will be banned from enjoying this privilege. The Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam himself will be perplexed as to why these people will be banned as he will recognise them from being from amongst his ummah. He will then be informed that these are the people from his ummah who brought in innovations into the Deen which he had left perfect after his demise. On account of this they would not be given the honour of being even recognised as his ummah. Then these people will be turned away and driven away.

And now we ask the question. How do we draw the line in differentiating between Sunnah and Bidah. The answer is simple. If it is found in Qur’aan and Sunnah it cannot be bidah. Anything else which cannot be proven by Qur’aan and sunnah becomes bidah.

Our deen is perfect and complete in all aspects. We do not need periodical reviews to make it more in keeping with the times like other laws which undergo changes from time to time. Those who introduce innovations in Deen are in reality contesting the laws of Allah Ta’ala and His beloved Messenger Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam. Can there be a greater crime than this? It is no wonder that these people become deserving of Hell Fire!

Bidah has become one of the weaknesses of this ummah of which we have been warned of clearly by the Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam. It seems as if we are drawn and attracted more by Bidah than the sunnah itself considering the prevalence of bidah in our midsts. Only the foolish would leave the sunnah and choose bidah as a pathway moreso when this pathway leads to hell-fire.

May Allah Ta’ala grant us the ability of rigidly adhereing to the sunnah and protect and safeguard us from all kinds of Bidah that we find prevalent today, Aameen.
