The word sunnah means the way and manner in which our beloved Nabi (S.A.W) lived his life. The way he spoke, ate, slept, the manner in which he interacted with people, the manner in which he addressed his elders, how he conducted himself with juniors, how he treated his wives, etc. Every aspect of the life of Nabi (S.A.W) is regarded as a sunnah. Every aspect of the life of Nabi (S.A.W) is a source of guidance and goodness for us.

The Sunnah of reading the Quraan:

1. The body and clothes must be clean (free of impurities - urine, blood, stool, alcohol, vomit and pus)

2. The place where the Quraan is to be recited, together with its surroundings must also clean.

3. To use the miswaak before reciting the Quraan.

4. To make wudhu.

5. To sit facing the qibla.

6. To place the quraan in a slightly elevated position.

7. To read A'oozu and bismillah before reading the Quraan.

8. To refrain from reading the Quraan in haste.

9. To read with a sweet and melodious voice and not in a singing tone. (It is haraam to read the Quraan in a tune imitating pop singers and in tunes that singers read for their lovers).

10. To read with tajweed. (Correct pronunciation)

11.  To refrain from unnecessary talk whilst reading the quraan. However if one is compelled to talk (even if it is to answer the salaam, islamic greeting) then one should resume one's recitation with A'oodhu.

12. To read loudly, as long as no disturbance is being caused to others and he does not apprehend insincerity (on his own part) by reading loudly.

Rasulullah (S.A.W) has said that a person who brings alive a dead sunnah (i.e. practices on a sunnah that people no more practice upon) will receive the reward of 100 martyrs.
The greater the sacrifice a person makes in following one command of Allah or following one sunnah, the greater the reward will also be.

Following the commands of Allah Ta'ala and the sunnats of Nabi (S.A.W) is the sign of love in the heart of a believer. We sometimes declare love for Nabi (S.A.W) in various ways reciting poems etc, but true love is following the commands of the beloved.

Nabi (S.A.W) said that the one who obeys me, loves me, and who loves me will be with me in Jannah.

May Allah bless us all with the ability to practice on the sunnahs of Nabi (S.A.W) and his company in Jannah.
